Met. Gr. II Training Course
Qualifications:
Post graduates in Physics, Mathematics, agriculture, Electronics or B. E, B. Tech, M. Tech in any discipline
Period and Location:
12 months [1st 6 months (Semester I) at Pune centre & next 6th months (Semester-II) at Pune centre or New Delhi centre as per stream of trainee.]
Target audience:
Fresh recruited Trainee Meteorologist Gr-II (Group-A officers of IMD, recruited directly through UPSC).
Subjects Taught:
Learning objectives /Expected skills to be developed:
- Preparation & dissemination of weather analyses, forecasts and warnings.
- Formulation of weather forecasts, warnings and advisories for sectoral applications (agriculture, aviation, shipping, fishing, hydrology, power, health etc.), emergency services and industry for assistance in better application of weather forecasts and warnings for efficient operation of weather sensitive activities,
- Create & manage climate data sets; ensure the quality of climate information and derive products.
- Create and/or interpret climate forecasts and model outputs for sector specific applications
- Communicate climatological information with users.
- Able to carry out research work independently or in group.
- Design, maintenance, calibration and operation of meteorological instruments; and quality control of observations.
- Process, generate products and generate application products from the observation platforms
- Design, maintain and operate communication network,
- Development of competencies to work efficiently as Meteorological Forecasters.
Mode of Evaluation of Performance:
Separate examination is carried out in each theoretical paper and practical paper mentioned above at the end
of each semester and viva voce examination are being held in addition to written examination. Trainees select a
research topic under the guidance of a member of faculty and submit project report, which will be evaluated and
marks awarded. The performance in the OJTs is also evaluated. The result of each term is declared separately.
The participant who fails to obtain minimum pass marks has to reappear.
Competency:
This course fulfils the WMO BIP-M requirements for competency.
